The WAWA project reimagines the interior of a compact two-bedroom apartment in Shanghai. The project serves a young couple and their daughter, warmly called Wawa. Because of her presence, many design decisions were inspired—from an adaptable tatami play zone to a bedroom that can grow with her. The project name therefore reflects both family life and the home’s guiding spirit.
The design balances professional work needs with daily family routines while ensuring long-term adaptability. Its principle is clear: to create a calm, efficient, and inspiring environment. This space supports both focused study and joyful domestic life.
The plan reshapes existing spaces to maximise storage, natural light, and circulation. The design organises the bedrooms into distinct zones The north side provides a study corner for the parents, where reduced daylight suits evening academic work. The south side remains a bright, restful area. The daughter’s room serves as a growing environment with a flexible study desk by the window, a cosy bed corner, and a full storage wall. This layout secures continuity from toddler years through school age.
The living room acts as a multifunctional hub. Here, the southern tatami zone transforms easily into a play corner, tea area, or guest room. The design weaves storage throughout the home, including entrance wardrobes, wall-long cabinetry, and compartments beneath the tatami. These features keep the home uncluttered, allowing work materials, toys, and personal items to stay accessible yet modest.
Materiality and colour reflect the family’s preferences. Natural timber, calming whites, and soft blues are enriched with accents of orange and green, creating a serene yet uplifting atmosphere. Custom furniture and built-in details reinforce clarity and continuity. A chalkboard-painted surface for the daughter’s drawings adds a creative touch. In addition, a wall for the mother’s ink paintings turns daily life into cultural expression.
WAWA reflects compact openness: a home that is flexible, efficient, and personal—designed to evolve with its family while radiating clarity and warmth.
