Banja Luka, the second biggest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has grown into a cultural and administrative hub. With its historic riverfront, university, and expanding business districts, the city is shaping a new identity as a place for international exchange. In recent years, investments in public projects have supported this growth and aimed to strengthen Banja Luka’s role as a modern European city. Therefore, the competition for a multifunctional hall followed this vision, calling for a landmark able to host performances, congresses, and exhibitions while also enriching daily civic life.

As part of this international competition, THA presented a proposal for a multifunctional congress centre. The concept introduced the hall as a dynamic gathering point that unites performance, exhibition, and civic interaction. At the core of the design is a 1,500-seat multi-use hall. In addition, two medium theatres with 250 to 750 seats were added, each designed with advanced stage technology and excellent acoustic quality. Rehearsal rooms and preparation areas were placed nearby, ensuring smooth backstage operation and flexible programming.

Above these venues, THA proposed a panoramic exhibition floor and a roof-garden restaurant. These features offered elevated views of the city and encouraged public use beyond scheduled events. Moreover, the mix of cultural and social zones created an open and welcoming environment. The circulation strategy was direct and transparent, allowing visitors to move easily through the building. Natural light, roof gardens, and terraces furthermore improved comfort and enhanced openness. As a result, flexible public areas supported the project’s role as a civic anchor.

Ultimately, this competition entry allowed THA to explore multifunctional architecture that adapts to both cultural and urban needs. The proposal aimed to position Banja Luka as a forward-looking cultural hub, blending international standards with local identity.
